Previous FBI director James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a legislative process.

The former director's lawyer submitted the answer on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would try to have the legal matter terminated for various factors including that his defendant, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

In court on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they aimed to present several motions to throw out the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully designated to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's legal matter was first managed by Erik Siebert, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his probe into a different rival - the New York official - failed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the court state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about several months into Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was leading an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey sparked a counter-response from Democrats when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government assert the former director gave untrue statements to Congress during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. In a video James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was accused, he said he was innocent and charged the former president of acting like a "autocrat".

"We have been aware for considerable time that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he said. "We refuse to live on our knees."

"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey surfaced after the former president shared on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and additional individuals.
