‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Phototherapy is clearly enjoying a surge in popularity. You can now buy light-emitting tools for everything from dermatological concerns and fine lines as well as aching tissues and gum disease, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device equipped with miniature red light sources, described by its makers as “a significant discovery for domestic dental hygiene.” Internationally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. There are even infrared saunas available, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, stimulating skin elasticity, soothing sore muscles, relieving inflammation and long-term ailments and potentially guarding against cognitive decline.

Understanding the Evidence

“It appears somewhat mystical,” says a neuroscience expert, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Of course, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, as well, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Daylight-simulating devices frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to boost low mood in winter. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.

Different Light Modalities

While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In serious clinical research, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, finding the right frequency is key. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, extending from long-wavelength radiation to short-wavelength gamma rays. Therapeutic light application uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.

Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It affects cellular immune responses, “and dampens down inflammation,” says Dr Bernard Ho. “Considerable data validates phototherapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”

Risk Assessment and Professional Supervision

Potential UVB consequences, like erythema or pigmentation, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which minimises the risks. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. And crucially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – different from beauty salons, where it’s a bit unregulated, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Commercial Products and Research Limitations

Red and blue light sources, he explains, “don’t have strong medical applications, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, improve circulatory function, oxygen utilization and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – an important goal for anti-aging. “Studies are available,” says Ho. “Although it’s not strong.” Nevertheless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. We don’t know the duration, ideal distance from skin surface, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Numerous concerns persist.”

Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, a microbe associated with acne. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – despite the fact that, says Ho, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he observes, however for consumer products, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Unless it’s a medical device, oversight remains ambiguous.”

Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects

At the same time, in innovative scientific domains, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he reports. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that results appear unrealistic. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, however two decades past, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he explains. “I remained doubtful. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that nobody believed did anything biological.”

Its beneficial characteristic, however, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, enabling deeper tissue penetration.

Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support

More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “All human cells contain mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” says Chazot, who prioritized neurological investigations. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is consistently beneficial.”

With specific frequency application, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In limited quantities these molecules, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”

Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pro-autophagy – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
