The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their visibility has noticeably surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems especially pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
