Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular rulings from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
